Perform administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of a physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by physician. Excludes “Physician Assistants”.

Some people focus their training on the clinical side of the business, so they can have a more direct, hands-on approach with patients. Others focus on the office management side of the business, where management, administration, and technological skills allow them to excel.

Wherever you decide to focus, completing your medical assisting training can give you the opportunity to work in a doctor’s office, hospital, long-term care facility, or other health care facility helping people in your community. Before graduating, you take the American Medical Tech (AMT) Exam. Once passed, you earn the RMA Credential and are a Registered Medical Assistant.
